Machu Picchu As You’ve Never Seen It (Unless You’ve Seen It)

Forget Megapixels. We’re talking Gigapixels; which is a term, I must admit, I’ve never heard of. This image of Machu Picchu was taken at a resolution of 15.9 gigapixels. Which means, I think, if you print it out, you could perhaps see earthworms burrowing through the Peruvian dirt. (I’m no scientist.) But you would also need a printer about a hundred yards wide.

Anyway, go here to see it. It will blow your brain off!

To learn what went into taking the picture (hint: it’s way more complicated than an iPhone) see the Youtube video here.

On a more sobering note, here’s why the photographer, Jeff Cremer, was motivated to take the picture.

“Machu Picchu is one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of the World and the most familiar icon of the ancient Inca. In 2008, the World Monuments Fund placed it on its Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites in the world due to environmental degradation mostly from tourism.”

Time out. I Just want to let the last sentence of that quote sink in for a minute. Okay, and now to the rest of the quote…

“I believed that this extraordinary site deserved a remarkable photo to hopefully raise awareness and help in its preservation.”

The final resolution of the image is 297,500 x 87,500 pixels, which is way way bigger than anything you can put on Facebook. To even attempt it would probably trigger a response team from Facebook’s helicopter brigade. (Oh yeah, it exists.)
Once you’ve marveled at the picture, and checked out the video, and you have a desperate yearning to visit in the flesh, you can find a few amazing (and reasonably priced) photography tours here that take great pains to provide tours in a sustainable and responsible way.
